The California avocado season is in full swing. In honor of the esteemed California avocado, also known as the alligator pear, here is some interesting information.
The Avocado was first introduced to California from Mexico in the 19th century. About 90% of the California crop is grown in the Southern California area with as much as 60% of that coming from the San diego Area.
There are over 100 varieties of avocado, but only 7 varieties are grown commercially in California including Hass, Bacon, Fuerte, Gwen, Lamb Hass, Pinkerton, Reed, and Zutano. Of the 7 varieties, the bass avocado makes up about 95% of the total crop.
Here is a little bit of information about each variety:
- The Bacon Avocado is a smooth, green skinned variety available from late fall into spring. It is oval shaped and known for its light flavor and easy peeling.
- The Fuerte Avocado is the original California Avocado. It has a smooth green skin and a creamy pale green flesh. It is grown fall through spring.
- The Hass Avocado makes up 95% of the commercial California crop. Its is green to dark green and has the longest shelf life of the varieties.
- The Reed Avocado is round in shape and is available from summer until early fall.
- Lamb Hass Avocado is very similar to the Hass with the most distinctive difference being the different shape of its seed. Flavor is nutty and smooth.
- Pinkerton Avocado is long and thin and has a smaller seed than other California Avocado varieties. The Pinkerton also has more usable flesh per avocado.
- The Gwen variety is similar in appearance and texture to the Hass but is larger in size. It has a medium seed and the flesh has a very creamy texture.
- The Zutano Avocado is pear shaped and is the first type of avocado to be available in the California Avocado season. The skin is yellows green and is one of the larger varieties.
