Customer Spotlight: Jan’s Health Bar
As one of the top wholesale produce distributors serving Orange County, we’re big fans of local businesses that showcase the best of what Orange County has to offer – amazing fruits and veggies, world-class surfing, and a lifestyle that is often imitated, but never, ever duplicated.
We’re lucky enough to work with some incredible customers here at Produce Services of Los Angeles, and one of our favorites is Jan’s Health Bar – the go-to place for surfers, musicians, foodies and visitors alike who are in search of healthy, handmade smoothies, salads, juices, acai bowls, and sandwiches made from fresh, all-natural ingredients.
An Icon In The O.C.
Jan’s Health Bar ranks among the most iconic of all long-standing establishments in the O.C. – over the past 40 years this little family-owned business has not only survived, but thrived as a stand-out in the crowded, fickle world of quick-serve food joints.
This popular local eatery has deep roots in the surf community, thanks in part to the fact that it was founded by Jan Gaffney, a Long Beach native who stepped onto her first board in 1962 after falling for a surfer dude. Legend has it that Jan bought her first surfboard at a neighborhood supermarket, and she quickly became a regular fixture at both The Pier and Huntington Beach Cliffs.
Jan graduated CSULB with a degree in anthropology, but she couldn’t resist the call of the surf – she landed a summer job right in the heart of her stomping grounds, Huntington Beach, serving up healthy, fresh ‘surfer food’ at the Good Earth Health Bar located in George’s Surf Shop. It was the ideal gig for a Southern Cal gal who loved people, surfing, and healthy, fresh food. After about three years, Jan purchased the business from Steve Pezman and immediately re-named her place ‘Jan’s Health Bar’.
Jan and her family served up hungry surfers from their original Huntington Beach location for 20 years before relocating to Huntington Surf and Sport. In 2010 Jan decided to sell her business to longtime employee Poppy Holguin, who along with her husband Andy have committed to carry on the tradition of healthy foods at Jan’s.
Their flagship shop now sits right on Main Street in Huntington Beach, and they’ve also branched out to locations in Costa Mesa and Laguna Beach. Construction is underway for a fourth Jan’s Health Bar in Corona Del Mar
Feeding Active SoCal Lifestyles
The concept behind Jan’s sounds simple enough – serve up pure, great-tasting snacks and meals made from fresh, locally-sourced ingredients. Of course, anyone who’s ever worked in the industry (or even tried to create their own fresh juices at home) knows that crafting preservative-free acai bowls, gluten-free baked goods, and other uber-healthy items takes a lot more effort than simply popping a frozen pre-made product into the deep fryer.
The extra effort it takes to create satisfying, natural foods is a labor of love for Poppy and her crew. She explains that, “we always use fresh, locally sourced ingredients (when available) and make sure that every item on our menu contributes to a healthy lifestyle”.
With a menu that’s chock-full of tasty, guilt-free meals and snacks like Kaleicious smoothies, Power Acai bowls, Santa Fe Cobb salads, and Sweet Green juice, it’s easy to see why Jan’s is popular among weekend warriors and pro athletes alike. If you’re looking to rub elbows with surf legends like Kelly Slater (the 11-time World Surf League Champ), or you simply want to get a taste of real, homemade Southern California surfer food at it’s finest, this is the place to go.
