Every case of kale, head of lettuce and basket of peaches has a story – today we’d like to share with you the story of a family-owned farming operation that has grown from a small, sharecropping business into the largest American shipper of bunched green onions, kale, radish, leeks, parsley, cilantro, beets and parsley!

Here’s what you need to know about Muranaka Farm, Inc.

From Humble Beginnings…..

Muranaka Farm was founded over 50 years ago by Minoru and Matsue Muranaka, sharecroppers who toiled long hours in the vegetable fields of Southern California. They worked hard farming and selling their fresh vegetables at the local market by the truckload, earning just enough to invest in their very own land in Moorpark, CA, where they established their business.

They continued to expand their market gardening operations while starting a family; their sons Harry and Roy grew up in the business, spending their days in the fields and at the markets with their mother and father.

Harry and Roy eventually assumed operation of Muranaka Farm from their parents; Roy headed up the hands-on veggie production, while Harry took over the business end of things. The brothers worked to build on the values instilled by their parents while expanding the family farming operation into a large, multi-national company.

Today Muranaka Farm is operated by Greg Emi, grandson of Matsue and Minoru Muranaka, making this one of California’s most successful multi-generation family farming operations.

To Industry Leaders! 

Muranaka Farm has grown to become the country’s largest producer of both bunched green onions and bunched leeks; they also produce radish, kale, parsley, cilantro, beets, hand-packed spinach and more. While their greens are a staple in many California kitchens, Muranaka Farms also supplies discerning customers throughout North America and Europe – about half of their produce goes to food service suppliers like us here at Produce Services of Los Angeles.

In order to meet the year-round demand for their premium-quality veggies, Muranaka Farm maintains operations in multiple regions. They have 600 acres of premium So Cal farmland at their headquarters in Moorpark, California and an additional 700 acres in Mexicali and Ojos Negros, Baja California, Mexico for a total of 1,300 acres.

Committed To Food Safety

One of the reasons why we love Muranaka Farm (aside from their amazing locally-sourced fresh vegetables) is their tireless devotion to food safety; they were among the first California producers to hire an independent, third-party safety auditor to ensure industry-leading compliance with food safety guidelines.

Muranaka Farm has current safety certification from both Primus Group Inc. and Scientific Certification Systems Inc., while their Mexico operations has recently been certified as GlobalGAP, a system developed in close consultation with the European importers and retailers.
