So, What Exactly Is Acai? 

Acai is a small tropical fruit that looks like a wild Maine blueberry, tastes like a blend of dark chocolate and wild black raspberries, and delivers a tart, refreshing and tropical taste. It grows in clusters known as cachos high up in towering, 80 foot high Acai palm trees which grow in the Amazon floodplains.

Harvesting the acai fruit presents significant challenges because harvesting must be done by hand, one tree at a time. Workers scale the dizzying heights of the acai palms to slice the cachos off, depositing the bunches of fruits into baskets called latas. Once harvested, processing companies like Tambor Acai have to work quickly to freeze and package the fruit, since it’s highly perishable.
